INTRODUCTION

Selma Alihodzic is an architect focusing on  realization of cultural projects.
Collaboratively, she has worked alongside some of the most celebrated international architectural firms, building large-scale and mixed-use projects in Germany and Japan. Currently she is based in Basel Switzerland.

MEDIATION + TEACHING

She experienced first-hand the fall of Yugoslavia in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and much later the Tōhoku earthquake in Japan. Those life-changing experiences have shaped her agency, exploring re-configurations of architectural spaces in environments of crisis and discovering their potential for new modes of practice.

Between Europe and Asia, she has set a route as a nomadic architect, creating a body of work that covers architectural theory, urban research and nearly every architectural typology.

Her works have been awarded and exhibited internationally. Essays, reportage, interviews and architectural reviews have been published among others in Bauwelt, the leading German magazine for urbanism and architecture.

Selma was an adjunct lecturer at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, where she was teaching contemporary architectural theory in the Masters curriculum. In 2014, she has been selected as one of the international outposts for OfficeUS – Pavilion of the United States of America at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition — la Biennale di Venezia.

Most recently she has contributed to the  XII International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo.

AS + KULTURPROJEKTE

AS means ACTIVATE SPACE and is the hands-on approach within Selma’s practice. With temporary interventions and installations she investigates the boundaries of architecture as a static profession and seeks to find potential in neglected urban spaces. She has realized a series of cultural projects in collaboration with artists, designers and creative individuals.

Among others, her tools of exploration have included pavilions, urban interventions, mobile architectures, AR-installations, façade projection, scenography, reportage, workshops with non-architects/ citizens/ municipalities/ NGOs, interviews with artists/urban planners/designers, geo-tagged mapping, talks, lectures, radio-shows – inclusive formats that use bottom-up methods.

Most recently she collaborates with COMMON FUTURE LAB an interdisciplinary platform, operating from Hong Kong, Taipei, Boston and Basel.
